UAE Jiu-Jitsu School Programme
The Jiu-Jitsu school programme, which began in 2008, is available to 13,000 pupils, grades 6 and 7 ( aged between 9 to 14 years old), in schools across the UAE. This includes more than 2000 girls.
The long-term goals are:
-
To improve the health of young Emiratis and teach them fitness, self-defense and discipline
-
To nurture a new generation of Jiu-Jitsu champions and thus develop a strong national team
Regional championships take place annually and encompass schools in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region
Last year, 25 coaches from Brazil worked in the programme, and even more have been added to handle the increase in schools. The coaching team includes more than 20 world champions.
In the 2009/2010 school year the project was expecting by adding 28 more schools 6 schools for girls and 24 schools for boys ) and to include grades 6 to 8. The total of schools is now 42 and this includes 81 Brazilian jiu-jitsu trainers.
For the 2010/2011 school year the Abu Dhabi Education Council decided to increase the project with a further 21 schools( 4 schools girls and 17 schools boys) so now even more children will be able to participate in this amazing project.
